A quick Q&A with the team:
So, how did you make the transition from student to the world of work?
Melissa: “I began my journey in the industry as an apprentice without any formal IT qualifications. Through fostering relationships with my team, I rapidly expanded my knowledge and was provided opportunities by the business to delve into areas that piqued my interest. The business also offered me formal courses to enhance my abilities and advance my career.”
Chloe: “After leaving higher education, I pursued further studies on the Island through UCM to attain my Business Management degree. While studying, I completed an internship in HR and then continued to work part-time to gain practical experience and exposure to real-world scenarios. Transitioning from the structured environment of school can initially feel daunting, but these experiences provided me with the platform to apply theoretical concepts acquired during my degree to real workplace situations.”
How do you believe Neon stands out from other employers, particularly in terms of career development opportunities in the Isle of Man?
Jowi: “Neon's commitment to ongoing learning is awesome. I really appreciate how they allocate funds for us to attend conferences and workshops. It's not just about networking — it's about staying current with industry trends and emerging technologies while also reinforcing the fundamentals of our skillset. Neon recognises the importance of staying ahead in a rapidly evolving tech landscape and keeping our edge sharp.”
Chloe: “Neon’s commitment to our Values (Integrity, Unity, Drive and Agility) is something that our entire team takes immense pride in and embodies every single day. These values aren't just words; as a young professional in the industry, I can attest that they are deeply ingrained in everything we do. Whether it’s our flexible working policies, charitable work or support for the community, Neon truly stands out as an employer who goes above and beyond.”
Can you share a memorable experience or project that you've been involved in since joining Team Neon (the Neoverse)?
Melissa: “My favourite memories from working at Neon always come down to the people. We always have a laugh in our team! When you spend many hours together, this is crucial for a positive working environment.”
Jowi: “During my time at Neon, I've had the chance to work on a variety of interesting projects. One of the most memorable tasks for me was setting up the Continuous Integration/Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. It was my first dive into the infrastructure side of development, and seeing my pipelines deployed into production and speeding up the development lifecycle was incredibly rewarding.”
If you were a student again, what piece of advice would you give yourself?
Melissa: “You are in control of your path, do not wait for opportunities as they are not always guaranteed to come your way. It took me a long time to realise my potential, but once I did, Neon supported me in understanding what value I could add to the business.”
Chloe: “I would suggest exploring local opportunities first and foremost. Looking back, I’m grateful to have been given the chance to pursue my studies while simultaneously gaining invaluable on-the-job HR experience through an internship and part-time work on the Isle of Man. This experience was instrumental in helping me discover my interests and aspirations for my career path. After all, you never truly know until you've given it a try!
I would also emphasise the importance of networking! Building connections with fellow professionals in the industry opens doors to potential opportunities, valuable learning experiences, and fruitful collaborations with like-minded individuals.
Lastly, I'd stress the significance of staying curious. You never know what is on the horizon, and you should always be willing to embrace new opportunities to learn new skills and try different things!”
